Summary of the department:

• Bulloch County Correctional Institute is a Level II minimum-security facility that houses approximately 132 low-security, long-term state prisoners and 28 county prisoners (misdemeanors).
• The primary function of Bulloch County Correctional Institute is twofold;
  1. To ensure the safety of the public as well as the offender, and
  2. To provide work details for the maintenance and construction of county roads, maintenance of county owned buildings, grounds, vehicles and heavy equipment, solid waste pick-up and disposal, providing custodial services to state agencies such as Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Department of Transportation.
• There are approximately 45 work details that go out to work daily.
• Bulloch county Correctional Institute was erected in 1946 as the Bulloch County Public Works Camp.  Major renovation and addition in 1989.
• There are 58 employees.
• Inmates develop OTJ skills in building maintenance and construction, food service, auto mechanics, landscaping, and custodial services.
• All state inmates are required to attend and complete classes in Substance Abuse, Family Violence, victim Impact, Corrective Thinking and Relapse Prevention.

• Bulloch County Magistrate Court is located at 101 Oak Street, at the corner of Oak & Hill Street.
• Business hours are Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 5:00pm.
• The Magistrate Court system in Georgia was established by an act of the Georgia Legislative with an effective date of July 1, 1983.  This followed the adoption of a new Georgia Constitution in 1982 that created a uniform system of Courts.  with the creation Magistrate Court system, all small claims courts and justice of the peace courts were abolished and their judges became magistrates.
• Magistrate Court is a limited jurisdiction court with both civil and criminal jurisdiction.  Magistrate Court processes the filing of civil claims in the amount of $15,000 or less, dispossessory warrants, garnishments, levy's writs of possession, abandoned motor vehicles, bonds for good behavior and county ordinance violations.  In addition, Magistrate Court issues bad check warrants and other criminal warrants.
• The Chief Magistrate and Deputy Magistrate hold hearings on warrant application , first appearances, contested civil claims, county ordinance violations and performs marriage ceremonies.

• Bulloch County State Court is located at the Bulloch County Courthouse, 2 North Main Street.
• The State Court of Bulloch County has jurisdiction over misdemeanor and traffic offenses in Bulloch County, and over most types of civil law suits.
• The Court was created by the Georgia General Assembly on August 10, 1903, and was then known as the City Court of Statesboro.  As the community has grown in the past 98 years, the State Court of Bulloch County has grown as well.
• Over the past 4 years, the Court's average case load has included:
  1. More than 463 civil law suits
  2. 650 misdemeanor criminal offenses
  3. 8,617 DUI and traffic offenses
• The Court has averaged more than $1.2 million annually in collections of fines and restitution's.
• On January 1, 2001, the State Court Judge's office became a full-time position, authorized by the Georgia General Assembly in 2000.
• Judge Gary Mikell who took office on that same day, became the first full-time state court judge in Bulloch County.
